Abstract:

I will describe some of the reasons why black holes -- particularly the supermassive ones -- are key actors in our modern view of the cosmos. I will then review recent observational and theoretical results which tell us where to find the most energy-efficient engines conceivable in nature: jet-producing active galactic nuclei (AGN). I will go through the different parts under the hood in such engines which may explain why they are so "green".
