Health and safety

Information regarding risks, appropriate behaviors, and emergency management in the main study, work, and research areas of the Department and the University.

The protection of health as a fundamental good and individual right is enshrined in the Italian Constitution (Article 32). The University of Bologna promotes and disseminates a culture of safety, applies the law on workplace safety (Consolidated Act on Health and Safety at Work, Legislative Decree 81/2008), and has adopted a Health and Safety Regulation for workplaces.

However, safety and health are not merely a set of rules or procedures—they represent a permanent attitude that must become an integral part of everyone’s behavior. Within the University, a specialized Prevention and Protection Unit has been established to provide consultancy services aimed at promoting the prevention and protection from occupational risks in the University’s workplaces.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy applies the University’s laws and regulations and is committed to promoting and spreading a culture of safety among all its users.

Main Strategies

These include training to disseminate knowledge and information, the Health and Safety Manual, the Access Regulation, risk assessment in laboratories, and emergency management. Below some key topics are detailed.

Laboratory Safety

By law, laboratories are considered hazardous environments. All users must be aware of safety management procedures in laboratories and contribute to them in accordance with legal requirements.

  • Safety Training

  • Emergency Plan

The emergency plan is an integral part of the Health and Safety Manual and outlines the procedures to follow in case of fire, evacuation, flooding, or medical emergency.

  • Access regulation to DIFA

Access to the Department, across all its locations, is governed by an access regulation designed to ensure service provision while safeguarding the safety of all users.
