AlmaWiFi and Networks

Information on the AlmaWiFi service and networks in general

The University provides internet network service to all its users (through AlmaWiFi) and to the international scientific community (through Eduroam).

AlmaWiFi and Eduroam

The AlmaWiFi connection is active in all DIFA premises. Access to AlmaWiFi is guaranteed with Unibo credentials (both for staff @unibo.it accounts and student @studio.unibo.it accounts).

For device configuration or access problems, consult the Ateneo AlmaWiFi page or contact assistenza.cesia@unibo.it.

It is also possible to request access to AlmaWiFi for temporary users of seminars and conferences sponsored by Unibo, more information on the Temporary Credentials for Conferences page.

It is also reminded that the Eduroam (Education Roaming) service is active in all Unibo premises, which allows access to the Ateneo Wifi network to all users with institutional credentials from international research institutes that have joined the Eduroam project.

Prohibition of Personal HotSpots (Rogue Access Points)

It is reminded that the AlmaWiFi signal interferes with any other type of wireless source.

For this reason, it is absolutely forbidden to create or use personal HotSpots other than AlmaWiFi or Eduroam hotspots managed by the university in all DIFA premises.

Both Access Points connected to the university network and HotSpots on one's own smartphone or tablet are forbidden, as they interfere with the university's Access Points.

Anyone who uses or would like to use other HotSpots or Access Points is invited to contact difa.csi@unibo.it to evaluate their feasibility or alternative solutions.

LAN Networks

Wired internet connection is available for all inventory PCs at DIFA. Access and management are in charge of Cesia. To request an IP address, follow the instructions on the IP Address Request page.

For problems and assistance, contact the email addresses indicated for each premise:

Join the 'Ateneo Directory Service' (DSA)

Access to the ALMAnet network, network services, and Ateneo applications must be done using DSA institutional credentials, as provided for by the 'Unified Privacy and Use of Computer Systems' text, published with rectoral decree no. 271/2009 of 23/2/2009 and subsequent amendments.

The University of Bologna automatically makes institutional credentials available to teachers, technical-administrative personnel, doctoral students, and students, and through the Accreditation procedure also to other types of subjects (e.g. visiting professors, consultants, collaborators).

Workstations must be configured to "join the DSA domain" so that user credentials are requested at thebeginning of activity. For information, consult the Workstations (PCs, printers, etc.) page of the structures - installation and maintenance.

Reporting Problems

To evaluate problems with AlmaWiFi, keep in mind that a good wireless signal is only the first link in a chain that connects two network devices; alone, it does not guarantee that the entire connection is free from problems (interruptions, insufficient bandwidth...), and the quality of the connection always depends on the recipient system's network.

In particular, video calls (e.g. with MS Teams, Zoom...) even if supported by a good AlmaWiFi connection, could still stutter and interrupt due to the connection segment that is not under the control of the university.
