Laboratorio fisica della materia

Short description

In this laboratory students carry out educational experiments related to material physics and nano physics. The experiments are designed to improve on specific student skills related to experimental physics such as operation of electronic measurement instrumentation, handling of delicate samples or calibration of quantitative measurement systems as well as impact on general skills such as error analysis and problem solving. Two courses of the Master degree in Physics of the MANO curriculum are held in this laboratory. During other periods of the year, laboratory activities are carried out with high school students for the Scientific Degree Project (PLS).

Instrumentation

  • Atomic Force Microscopy (Nanoeducator – NT-MDT)
  • Temperature dependent electronic measurements
  • Optoelectronic determination of the semiconductor bandgap
  • Haynes-Shockley experiment to determine carrier diffusion in semiconductors
  • Luminescence emission spectroscopy for quantum confinement in nanoparticles
  • X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy for elemental analysis
  • Electrochemical thin-layer semiconductor deposition
  • Impedance spectroscopy to study metal-semiconductor junction
  • Determination of Boltzmann-constant and elementary charge by electronic noise analysis.

Advisory services

The Laboratory organizes teaching classes also for external visitors and is available for consultancy regarding teaching and presentation of material physics experiments.

Teaching and training

The laboratory offers its resources to support:

  • 2 laboratory courses in LM in Physics, curriculum MANO
  • Development of degree thesis (L in physics, LM in Physics, MANO curriculum)
  • Development of research projects for PhD students and postdoctoral students
