Program
The ESA space missions Hera and Ramses demonstrate how asteroid research is becoming increasingly central to planetary defense. Hera is designed to study an asteroid system up close in order to measure its mass, internal structure, composition, and orbital dynamics — key parameters for understanding how these bodies form and, most importantly, how they would respond to a possible deflection attempt. RAMSES, on the other hand, is conceived as a rapid and flexible mission, aimed at reaching a near-Earth asteroid on short timescales and collecting essential data when timely characterization is critical. The presentation will provide a clear overview of the goals, instruments, and scientific impact of both missions, highlighting the strong connection between small-body science, NEO monitoring, and impact-risk mitigation strategies.
